Pre-Season Predictions - Adams Division

By Akash Asif (New Jersey Devils) On Sunday 24th July 2022 / 6:43pm

Boston Bruins

The Boston Bruins currently have no GM so I will not be writing a lengthy analysis. The Bruins selected Nathan Gaucher with the 27th overall pick in the draft and remained relatively quiet during the off-season.

Strengths: The Bruins top-six forward group is incredibly strong led by Brad Marchand, Patrice Bergeron, and David Pastrnak. Charlie McAvoy leads the defense with Thomas Greiss as their starting goalie. This team does not lack experience or leadership.

Weaknesses: There is little depth after the top 9 forwards and top 4 defensemen. The team is also looking to compete with a 36-year-old goalie, which can be difficult. Both the forward and defense group are lacking the ability to play two-way hockey.

Prediction: Boston will fight for a playoff spot.

Buffalo Sabres

The Buffalo Sabres had a relatively busy off-season with some trades and draft selections. On the trade font, the Sabres picked up forward Shane Pinto. Another major trade included Pierre-Luc Dubois landing in Buffalo in exchange for Tage Thompson and Ryan Chesley. The Sabres had three first round picks in the draft and they selected Simon Nemec (5th), Ivan Miroshnichenko (21st), Jimmy Snuggerud (29th).

Strengths: The Buffalo Sabres roster is slowly starting to come together with some tremendous youth. Their core of current roster players is led by Jack Hughes, PL Dubois, and Rasmus Dahlin. This core is starting to fill-out with other young players, such as Casey Mittelstadt, Ty Smith, and Jesperi Kotkaniemi. There are also additional prospects on this team with incredible potential, such as Luke Hughes, Owen Power, and Yaroslav Askarov.

Weaknesses: The roster is inexperienced and there is little depth. There is minimal chance that Anton Forsberg is going to be a legitimate starting goalie for the team this season.

Prediction: The Sabres will be fighting for a lottery pick during this upcoming season.

Detroit Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings had a busy off-season, which was highlighted by a major trade that sent Moritz Seider to the New Jersey Devils. In return, Detroit received Vladimir Tarasenko, Filip Hronek, first round pick in Y4, and the 7th overall pick in this year’s draft. The Red Wings had 4 picks in the first round and they selected Matthew Savoie (6th), Cutter Gauthier (7th), Frank Nazar (10th), and Brad Lambert (22nd). Detroit continues to pile up valuable young assets.

Strengths: The Detroit Red Wings are led by Nazem Kadri and Vladimir Tarasenko up front while Mark Giordano patrols the blueline. The team has some tremendous youth that is upcoming with the likes of Lucas Raymond, Anton Lundell, Dylan Guenther, and Simon Edvinsson. Not to mention all their recent first round selections.

Weaknesses: The roster needs quite a bit of work as it severely lacks depth and experience. Goaltender, Alex Nedeljkovic, still has a lot to prove in the league. There is more star power needed on the roster and that should come as the youth on this roster realizes its potential.

Prediction: The Red Wings will be fighting for a lottery pick during this upcoming season.

Florida Panthers

The Florida Panthers selected Fraser Minten as the 23rd overall pick in the draft. The Panthers made a major splash in free agency through the signing of Marc-Andre Fleury. Florida also made a major trade as they shipped out Jack Eichel in a transaction that brought back Robert Thomas and Ivan Barbashev.

Strengths: The Florida Panthers are led by Aleksander Barkov and Jonathan Huberdeau up front, which is rounded out by Chandler Stephenson, Max Pacioretty, and Robert Thomas. Kris Letang, and Aaron Ekblad lead the defense followed by MacKenzie Weeger and Alec Martinez. With MA Fleury in net and Cam Talbot as his back-up, there is a lot to like about this Florida Panthers team.

Weaknesses: It is difficult to guess what the Panthers bottom six will look like and whether they will be able to play strong defense. There is also very little depth on the farm roster so if injuries start piling up, this team will be in a lot of trouble.

Prediction: The Florida Panthers will challenge for the division title.

Montreal Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens were quiet this off-season and did not make very many moves. The off-season was made even less busy when the team traded their first-round pick to Vegas Golden Knights for picks in future years.

Strengths: The Canadiens team has a nice blend of youth and experience on the roster. Their forward group is led by Nick Suzuki, Tyler Toffoli, and Christian Dvorak. On defense, they are led by Tyler Myers, David Savard, and Oliver Ekman-Larsson. Montreal also has Carey Price backstopping the team.

Weaknesses: Montreal Canadiens are lacking superstar skaters on the roster who can take over a game on their own. The team also lacks defensive forwards and has limited depth that can be fully exposed if there are injuries.

Prediction: Montreal will fight for a playoff spot.

Ottawa Senators

The Ottawa Senators will continue to wait patiently as the youth on their team continues to progress and develop. With the second overall pick, they added a dynamic forward to their roster in Shane Wright and later selected Reid Schaefer early in the second round. The Senators also shipped out Shane Pinto to the Buffalo Sabres for a flurry of draft picks.

Strengths: The Senators are a team trending upwards with a handful of incredibly talented young players including Brady Tkachuk, Tim Stutzle, Josh Norris, Drake Batherson, and Thomas Chabot. This group is complimented by additional youth on the roster, such as Alex Formenton, Erik Brannstrom, Jake Sanderson, and Shane Wright.

Weaknesses: The team is not ready to compete this season with limited depth and star power. There is little experience on the team and Matt Murray has had a few difficult seasons in net. Although, the team is full of young talent, the Senators will struggle to keep up with other teams during this next season.

Prediction: The Senators will be fighting for a lottery pick during this upcoming season.

Toronto Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs spent most of their off-season trading away picks and players to St. Louis in exchange for money and made zero draft selections. Sometimes consistency is important because the team may not have needed too much change.

Strengths: Toronto has Auston Matthews, Mitchell Marner, John Tavares, and William Nylander as their core forwards with Alex Pietrangelo and John Carlson leading the defense. This is a team that is built on star power as they certainly have players with massive name recognition across the league.

Weaknesses: The team currently has limited depth on the bottom six for their forwards with little help on the farm roster. The Maple Leafs are also currently $4 MM over the salary cap and will need to subtract from their roster to become cap compliant. Jack Campbell as a starting goalie is also a question mark.

Prediction: Toronto will fight for a playoff spot.

Tampa Bay Lightning

The Tampa Bay Lightning are the defending cup champions. Although, the team didn’t make any major moves this off-season, they did make a flurry of moves by shipping out Jan Rutta and Cal Foote for some draft assets. The Lightning selected Topias Leinonen as their first-round pick.

Strengths: The Lightning continue to have a strong forward group that is led by Brayden Point, Steven Stamkos, and Nikita Kucherov. These superstars are complimented by Alex Killorn, Ondrej Palat, and Anthony Cirelli. On the backend, the Lightning continue to have one of the best defensive groups with Victor Hedman, Ryan McDonagh, and Mikhail Sergachev leading the way. This entire machine is then backstopped by arguably the best goaltender in the league, Andrei Vasilevskiy.

Weaknesses: There are not too many weaknesses on the roster. One potential concern that jumps out is their lack of depth after their first 12 forwards because if there is an injury, the team can be in some trouble.

Prediction: The Tampa Bay Lightning will challenge for the division title.

Overall Division Standings Prediction:

  1. Tampa Bay Lightning
  2. Florida Panthers
  3. Toronto Maple Leafs
  4. Boston Bruins
  5. Montreal Canadiens
  6. Detroit Red Wings
  7. Buffalo Sabres
  8. Ottawa Senators

Blues Considering Moving Their Y2 1st Round Pick

By Kyle Haubrich (St. Louis Blues) On Thursday 16th June 2022 / 12:35pm

St. Louis, MO - We have word from our sources within the Blues organization that GM Haubrich is not real thrilled with the depth in the CAFHL Entry Draft this year and therefore the Blues might be willing to move their 1st round pick.

Our sources say that if anyone is interested, reach out to GM Haubrich and see if a deal can be struck.
